Story of the Project
BAYPET Plastic Recycling Industry Facility, boasts a state-of-the-art factory in İzmir, specializing in recycling waste PET bottles. Commencing operations in 2021, BAYPET is located in Tire, one of Turkey's regions with the most limited water resources. Consequently, one of the biggest challenges faced in establishing a plastic recycling facility was operating a highly water-intensive production facility sustainably. Given the region's inability to meet the plant's approximate 120 m³/hour water consumption, Ekosistem Engineering intervened to develop innovative wastewater recovery solutions.
A Pioneering Approach to Water Saving Through Wastewater Recovery
With a system specifically designed for BAYPET, Ekosistem Engineering achieved a 98% wastewater recovery rate, significantly reducing the plant's reliance on external water sources. This system enabled an environmentally friendly production process, reducing the water used to produce one kilogram of PET flake from 4 liters to 0.3 liters. This dramatic decrease minimized the plant's environmental impact, contributing to the water ecosystem and taking a significant step towards preserving water resources.
Why Is PET Recycling Important?
PET, which does not decompose naturally, is a significant waste type that harms the environment if not recycled. Biologically degrading PET is extremely difficult and costly. Therefore, with the increasing use of PET, recycling is of paramount importance both as a solution to environmental problems and for sustainability. The energy obtained from burning PET has negative environmental impacts due to the harmful gases released during the combustion process. For this reason, the most suitable management method for PET waste is recycling, both economically and environmentally. Recycling also contributes to the national economy by saving energy and raw materials.
An Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable Production Facility with Ekosistem Engineering
Designed with a capacity of 3,000 m³ per day, the BAYPET facility operates 24/7, contributing to sustainable production. By achieving an annual water saving of approximately 800,000 m³, enough water is saved to meet the annual water needs of 20,000 people. This goal was achieved with Ekosistem's water recovery system, enabling the facility to produce without wasting water. Since the installation process, Ekosistem Engineering has been alongside BAYPET, providing continuous support in overcoming operational challenges.
The BAYPET project is not only limited to water conservation and recycling but is also a success story that sets an example for the sector with its environmentally friendly technology. If you want to create a new success story, feel free to contact us!
